HOW TO PERFORM USER RESEARCH?

Hello readers! We’re back (after quite some time, yeah!) with a long-due update on methods of user research. This is our fifth blog in the series of Usability Engineering for Medical Devices. Check out our previous blogs on Applying Usability Engineering to Medical Devices, Usability Engineering Process Steps, Use Specifications, and Writing Intended Use.

This blog will introduce you to the concept of User Research and various methods that can be deployed to help you know your users well in advance!

So, what is user research? The title is self-explanatory, isn’t it? Research done to understand users. But wait a minute, aren’t we in the business of making products and not researching users all around the globe? Isn’t that what you would say? Well, in that case, may we take you back to our previous blog on Use Specifications to set the context?

User research focuses on user behaviors, user needs, and user challenges in relation to the product you’re developing. Typically performed at the start of the design process, user research encompasses various methodologies to collect data and feedback from target users. User research is a process in itself to understand the impact of (future) design on the target users.

Common question – Is it really that important? What if we skip this part and directly go for testing? It’s faster that way, yeah? Well, if you’re seriously considering this, then know that skipping user research means basing your product design on assumptions. Not engaging with target users early on makes it challenging to fulfill user needs in the long run.

Now, if you’re convinced that user research is as important as designing the product itself, let’s dive into understanding various methods of conducting user research. Don’t get overwhelmed by the long list. You need to apply only relevant methods depending on your product’s complexity of the design, the risks involved, and the intended use.

It’d be difficult for us to explain each of the methods shown above in a single blog; so, we picked the most useful ones. Check them out!
